crackie

yesterday evening, at the last moment, i managed to get a ticket to a private showing of sherry white's movie "crackie" (thanks marilee and helen).(that's sherry on the right and meeghan greeley on the left) sherry is from here. she grew up in stephenville and did a theatre degree at grenfell college in corner brook. she was a good friend of my children. she moves back and forth from st. john's and toronto now, has become a script writer for both tv and films. "crackie" is her latest film. it has been shown at the toronto film festival, cannes, vancouver and calgary and has been accepted in the czech republic, turkey, india and more. it is receiving critical acclaim. the star, meeghan greeley, is also from corner brook.a 4th year student at the college, this was her first movie role. she is amazing.
set in small-town newfoundland, mitsy struggles with the confines of her life and takes solace in the company of her adopted dog (crackie is the newfoundland term for a mutt or mixed-breed dog). the story is universal, not parochial. it is large, not small. like a fairy tale. it will be closing the women's film festival in st. john's at the end of october. so if you get a chance to see it, please do... <
